This was an amazing sight to witness, thousands of geese, mostly snow geese, taking off. I knew they were about to take off from the loud sounds they were starting to make. Luckily, I got off a few good shots. It was near the end of the day and I was just getting ready to leave. The Canadian Geese were actually landing, and that is probably what caused the snow geese to take off.

Makes me think about the Movie Birds from Alfred Hitchcock. It can be quite intimidating to be around so much bird :-)
Great picture! Frida @ 2009-12-22 15:56:17
Excellent! Must have been an amazing moment. tom @ 2009-12-22 16:21:01

man, that sure are a lot birds! i'm not into hunting, but i'm guessing there's a high probability of me not missing a shot.. :D great capture.. :) rian @ 2009-12-22 20:00:01
Oh wow, that's wonderful! I was in the middle of a huge flock of small shorebirds once here, and it was the most amazing thing to be amidst them when they all took off around me. Jan @ 2009-12-22 21:32:06
so many of them! and so much motion - and yet none of them looks confused - it almost looks choreographed. michele @ 2009-12-22 21:46:38

I bet it was incredible standing there as they took to the skies. This is stunning, with such a sense of flow and movement, I almost have to duck (no pun intended) out of the way in case they hit me. Superb SOUL AFLAME @ 2009-12-24 00:16:11
Wait. Are you saying the Canadian geese displace the snow geese, John? I guess I thought they all were Canadian geese flying south for the winter! Man! That's a lot of geese...and you were there to grab the opportunity. Ginnie @ 2009-12-24 00:45:22
Extraordinary moment you captured. Beautiful site and scene. All the best to you and yours..happy holidays!!! Marcie @ 2009-12-24 07:56:06

Stunning work, as usual, John.
Clever decision to turn the photo to black and white, making it not a 'scenery/birds' photo, but into a work of patterns.
Always fun to see your works!
