Ray of Light in the Darkness
Info + Comments (101)
The image is one day after Hurricane Ida passed by Atlantic City. The waves were still high and the damage was predicted in the millions of dollars. There was still an ominous feeling from the sound of the waves crashing against this pier. However, there was a sense of relief too, now that the storm had passed.
If you've enjoyed my photos, I would greatly appreciate your vote for the 2011 Photoblog Awards.
The graffiti on the piers took me by surprise. I like it as an element here and your title is perfect for this.
@ 2009-11-30 21:33:51
Simply amazing! You've outdone yourself again, John. This is just.... awesome!
@ 2009-11-30 22:04:54

Excellent process, perfect symmetry and perspective as always
@ 2009-12-01 06:27:17
Wow - almost psychedelic, which is odd to say about a B&W, yet the image has a strobe-light feeling to it.
@ 2009-12-01 06:41:09
Un procesado con resultados expectaculares.
Magnifica ,eres un maestro.

@ 2009-12-01 19:20:07
You've done these a few times but they still haven't gotten old. You've outdone yourself on this one. It's superb. Radiant I think is the best word to describe what I see when looking at the tones in this one.
@ 2009-12-01 19:48:27
Always perfect here. COngrasts for this amazing work!
POlydactyle @ 2009-12-01 19:49:26
Almost makes me dizzy. The piles and pier underside create a mirror-like tube for the roiling water. At least, that is the feeling I get.
Anita Bower @ 2009-12-01 20:05:19
what an ethereal atmosphere!!! just faaabulous!!! you know, your photography is approaching something 'other' than a 'photo' -- this almost looks like some sort of super fine spray painting work... simply amazing (as per usual) but 5 stars for going above and beyond -- this is beautiful and brilliant!
@ 2009-12-01 20:20:44
A magical composition in every way, John.
@ 2009-12-01 21:49:58
Dark water always freaks me out. I don't think I could have stood there with a camera and taken anything remotely close to this very cool shot.

@ 2009-12-02 06:38:16
This one has a very unique feel to it. It's almost like you added a texture above the image. Being able to see the posts go below the waves is incredible.

quelle technique derrière tout ça, je suis admirative. ;)
@ 2009-12-06 20:56:29
Excellent - the horizontal lines of light works perfect with the pier construction.
And we know what you mean, having seen Ike destroyed much of Galveston - there is something peaceful over the last waves, still strong but just not strong enough anymore....
Framed and Shot

@ 2009-12-07 07:16:38
I-M-P-R-E-S-S-I-V-E and E-X-C-E-P-T-I-O-N-A-L! Sure we prefer no hurricane... But you catch the release at the end of the tunnel... I could even say that the key to the world of elves is inscribed on the walls! Bonne semaine.
@ 2009-12-07 10:03:36
I love your post process - I've no idea how you get such great result. It's so outstanding - I've to often seen so much overprocessed HDR's, but you still stay as the master!

Wow! stunning image. The underside of the pier seems to exist in another dimension.
@ 2010-01-21 12:28:32
Whoa, the forces of water and wind that must be directed down the aisles of your submerged "cathedrals" must be incredible during a hurricane. What a site to behold even on a "calmer" day.
