stunning work John. love the beautiful colors and the sunlight peeping through the dark clouds. beautiful! :) claire @ 2009-01-09 14:32:54
WOW John this is one of my favorites of yours so far and that is saying alot considering how good your photos are! Amazing lighting and composition! Andy @ 2009-01-09 14:57:54
Again a wonderfull picture, great detail, exellent toning, color and contrast. Congratulations John, this is a masterpiece.
BTW, thanks for my first bookmark ever on photoblogs.org. I appreciate it. Krims@nline.be @ 2009-01-09 15:00:48
Amazing shot! Colors are nice and mood is very special. I like warm lights from the sky. Giorgio @ 2009-01-09 15:10:34
Great light and colors. Is this one shot or several layered together? Nick @ 2009-01-09 15:35:35
What a painting. I imagine you sitting in front of the computer, "painting" with light these beautiful canvases. Chris Chisu @ 2009-01-09 15:46:00
I am absolutely amazed with what you're able to do with a photo. Incredible atmosphere, these colours and the light on water. Superb. Do you do workshops? ;) Joanna @ 2009-01-09 15:59:59
This pier turns to be a science-fiction movie scene :)
Way cool! yz @ 2009-01-09 16:11:31

another awesome sci-fi-y shot. love the colors and textures in the poles and under the dock. and the lighting is absolutely creepy :) joe @ 2009-01-09 18:17:21
OOOOOOO, gritty! I really like the composition, the light ain't bad either! Good job. I find it so frustrating when I walk round photo exhibitions looking at conceptual rubbish that pretends the idea/concept over rules the image quality. I think those 'artists' need to get online for a reality check! Sorry, Ranting.
Just out of interest are you in the photomatix or photoshop camp when it comes to HDR? Silas collins @ 2009-01-09 18:38:35
Very nice work here, its very surreal! I always enjoy seeing your work. Brian @ 2009-01-09 19:03:55
I feel kind of weird critiquing someone who's a master of his artform. It's like me walking up to Picasso and telling him what I don't' like about his paintings.
I really like the composition. And the right side is terrific. The left, however, looks a bit "hard" to me. Too sharp. Perhaps to much saturation in the reds. It almost looks like a composite to me, which is unusual because you're usually the only person I know of who can use HDR as heavily as you do and still have it look natural on a consistent basis. 613photo @ 2009-01-09 19:44:09
Thanks Dustin. I really have to purchase a monitor calibrating system. I use several monitors at home and work (actually have 3 different monitors on my desk at work), plus my laptops. The results vary and I will probably re-upload my original image that was much darker overall. However, my monitor at work it appeared very dark and now that I look at the image at home it's too bright. Thanks for the critique, my intent was for the sun and reflection to be the central focus point not the left side. John Maslowski @ 2009-01-09 21:30:22
Stunning work, really like the rays breaking through the clouds.along with the great texture and color tones on the piers.
the sun peering through the clouds and the pier is really a new element that i really like about this one.. awesome work as usual.. :D Rian @ 2009-01-09 23:58:06
Truly beautiful ! I like the sky and the prospect !
Excellent post processing ! A true work of art ! One @ 2009-01-10 00:01:16
This is wonderful. The overall "bright darkness" (yes, we know it sounds silly, but we thought it fitting) pulls us into the image. We generally find it difficult to comment on your pictures because there is difficult to give any useful and constructive criticism as we find them technically and compositionally top notch. We wanted to comment on this, however, because this is probably our new favourite.
The composition is excellent, but we find ourselves wondering what is happening below the pier on the left. Maybe an even darker scene could be found there.
Excellent work and Happy New Year to you. Framed and Shot @ 2009-01-10 00:16:35
Really impressive and so powerful ! A very special mood, somehow futurist... but surely something of an end of a world mood ! Exceptional and really eyecatching. The post-processing really enhances textures and colors. Clever work. Florence @ 2009-01-10 01:28:45
Great detalis and atmosphere for this shot. Impressive work! Simone @ 2009-01-10 02:58:22

The subtle rays of light is what really makes it for me.
Man, you definitely have a very cool style. Michael Rawluk @ 2009-01-10 12:16:52
Wonderful composition. The detail and color on the left is stunning. I am somewhat bothered by the two points of light on that pier on the right, especially the one right at the edge. harry @ 2009-01-10 13:20:20
OK, this one is just fantastic. Literally!!! Its out of this world and takes me to some strange and appealing fantasyland. Very cool. Andres @ 2009-01-10 14:36:55
I'm struggling to put into words what my impression is of this image. I totally love the whole right side of this - it is natural and it is perfection. I'm bothered a bit by the left side - it doesn't look at all realistic to me and that is what I love about your work - the realism and natural beauty of what you capture. You're still my favorite photographer! :) Toni @ 2009-01-10 15:32:32
Nice composition and great "dark" light extracted during HDR postprocessing. Just waiting when some strange creature pops from the water, real fantasy ;p) Miro at LightIsAllAround.com @ 2009-01-10 16:06:10
Stunning!! WOW! This one is so powerful and dramatic. FANTASTIC!!! Marcie @ 2009-01-10 16:43:17
As usual I love the look and feel of your photo. When I looked at this one I almost felt as if it was two different images, the left side and the right side have such a different feel to them and yet together this is such a dramatic image. Fantastic! Jamie @ 2009-01-10 16:50:48
Dustin hit the nail on the head when he said you are the master of this genre, in my opinion. I always view your work with a certain sense of bewilderment and awe. Technically I couldn't even begin to understand the skills you utilise in these fabulous artworks, but I know what I like, which to me is what counts.
A stunning image, incredibly detailed and pleasing to my eyes. As always, absolutely amazing work. Those subtle rays of light hitting the water blow my mind. EYES WIDE SHUT @ 2009-01-10 17:19:54

The sky is so dramatic. Must have been breath taking watching it change as you captured images. I'll always find the pier scary, but I'll try not to mention it any more:-) sherri @ 2009-01-10 22:13:08
so dramatic, so alive with the bright and shining moon! it's hard to imagine this is a photograph at all. it looks like an intricate ink drawing that you spent hours and hours scratching out. it is simply beautiful in that amazing way you are able to capture and enhance contrasting textures, the sleek water and rusty pilings. i love it john! robin @ 2009-01-11 01:09:57

Wow, looks like a scene of a movie. I love the dark mood. I has a dramatic dark side and a brighter happy side. You nicely reveal the details in the darker areas without making much (read: no) noise. LightningPaul @ 2009-01-11 15:39:17
interesting picture this is.
I find the right side of the picture looking more realistic, the leftside more like a painting, but it does fit together.
Nice how you can see some very subtile sunbeams reaching out for the water. janko @ 2009-01-11 15:40:13
